Get creative with making a class set of bird beaks

Content description ACSSUO43

Living things have structural features and adaptations that help them to survive in their environment

Adaptations are how a plant or animal is built (its structure) or how it behaves that allow it to survive and reproduce in its environment.

Students will investigate adaptations in birds using models of bird beak shapes and different types of bird “food”. They will understand the importance of physical adaptations to an organism’s survival.

For this activity I made class sets of bird beaks using clothes pegs, hot melt glue, pop sticks, satay sticks, pipe cleaners, flywire and plasterboard hangers. Be creative.

We used a variety of bird foods including sunflower seeds or pumpkin seeds, string in damp sand (worms), marshmallows threaded on wire (fruit) and bean bag fill (fish)

Note -This activity can be done with two, three or four types of beaks
